RICHARD AVEDON

PHOTOGRAPHS 1946 – 2004

Richard Avedon's minimalistic portraits are famous for revealing the inner strengths and weaknesses of the people he photographed. He himself was well known for the infamous strategies he drew upon to help set up the scenes he wanted to capture. One example involved the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. Known for their love of animals, the American photographer told the couple that his taxi had just run over a dog on the way to the photo shoot simply to capture their horrified expressions on film. But Avendon not only applied his photographic hunting skills to the rich and famous. Hundreds of his the portraits of everyday people – which he took for the "In the American West" project – have become icons of photography. Over one hundred large format and triplex reproductions of his most beautiful, classic shots have now been published in a high-quality photo book: "Photographs 1946–2004".
